My Innovation, My Future
I joined one of the public universities in Kenya ready and particularly thrilled about this new venture. My siblings would say “this will be some of the best days of your life”. I had the time of my life. The prospect of having a car, my own house, a fat bank balance and a beautiful lady beside me made me look forward to completion of my studies at the university. I dared to dream, The Kenyan Dream.
Armed with my certificate after completion of my university studies, I applied for numerous job opportunities. Two years later I had been in and out of internship programs but never got permanently employed. I was getting frustrated and needed a new lease of life. With the rate of unemployment, the Kenya dream was fading until I heard of business oriented innovations through Dr. Tonny Omwansa whom I initially met through email correspondence. The Dream was alive once more.
Dr. Omwansa is the current chair of the committee spear heading the Nairobi Innovation Week. He encourages an innovation driven market as the best practice in the world to spur Economic Growth. Universities play a key role in development and capacity building in the society. Strengthening academia through research and new innovative ideas is key to achieving a business oriented society consequently solving the problem of unemployment.  Moreover, he added “by virtue of the number of graduating students, employment opportunities are shrinking.”
A competitive market promotes productivity and a high input from the various stakeholders. Partnerships are encouraged across the globe through sharing ideas to spur economic growth and financial freedom by virtue discipline and industry.
The Nairobi Innovation Week 2016 is expected to facilitate creation of various partnerships that may spur growth. Young innovators are encouraged to attend the second edition to be held at the University of Nairobi between 1st and 5th August 2016. The registration deadline has been extended to 30th June 2016.
